Urodzony w 1973 Snekkestad to klasycznie wykształcony saksofonista, nauczyciel Det Kongelige Danske Mussikonservatorium, współpracujący z orkiestrami Kringkastingsorkestret i Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen, członek znanego duńskiego zespołu wykonującego muzykę kameralną Copenhagen Saxophone Quartet. Wśród muzyków z którymi współpracuje są m.in.: Barry Guy, Raymond Strid i Lotte Anker.

Conic Folded to debiut płytowy Torbena w roli lidera i jednocześnie autora wszystkich jedenastu kompozycji. Noodles or Icecream, Icon, September, Seated Man korespondują w moim uznaniu z kameralną muzyką tria Jimmy'ego Giuffre z okresu Thesis/Fusion/Free Fall.

Wrażenie spójności nadają trzy wypowiedzi solowe Torbena będące łącznikami i kodą (Seated Man/Conic Folded/Løvetann).

Flowers. Jon Balke preparując fortepian wykorzystuje go czasem perkusyjnie. Struny fortepianu brzmią momentami jak instrument używany w indonezyjskim gamelanie (Undercurrents). W przebiegu całego albumu słychać tradycję muzyki awangardowej, choćby tej spod znaku Johna Cage'a. Czasem preparacje instrumentów budzą skojarzenia z drone music. Jonas Westergaard pięknie gra arco w Icons.

Conic Folded it's not a new album, released back in 2009 by an independent Danish label ILK records. Due to the quality and uniqueness of the music therein contained, in my opinion deserves to be recalled also as a presentation of its author, who is Norwegian composer and multi-instrumentalist Torben Snekkestad.

Born in 1973 Snekkestad is a classically trained saxophonist, teacher in Det Danske Kongelige Mussikonservatorium, working with orchestras such as Kringkastingsorkestret and Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen, member of the famous Danish band performing chamber music Copenhagen Saxophone Quartet. Also plays solo concerts of his own compositions, as well as Scandinavian and other artists, to name Berio, Stockhausen, and Scelsi. He recorded two great albums with avant-jazz quartet Spring (Banke, Westergaard, Bruun), for ECM as a member of Trygve Seim Orchestra, and in 2011 with The Living Room Trio (Snekkestad, Strønen, Kjærgaard). Among musicians with whom he works are: Barry Guy, Raymond Strid and Lotte Anker.

Conic Folded is Torben's debut album as a leader and also as an author of all eleven compositions. Horizon of this music seems to be wide, as a potential inspiration, to my recognition Noodles or Icecream, Icon, September, Seated Man correspond with a Jimmy Giuffre's chamber music from Thesis/Fusion/Free Fall period. Seated Man for me resembles an ambience of Arve Henriksen playing or Tony Scott's sound on Music for Zen Meditations. Vibrating sound of the clarinet at the end of this composition makes me also think about alto saxophonist Jesper Zeuthen. I suppose that Ben Goldberg and Marty Ehrlich would be delighted to have in their repertoire poetical Icons. Somehow there are fewer references to the strictly jazz playing Zobob.

Configuration of the album is very interesting - impressionistic, romantic songs were separated by sonoristic, atonal explorations, feeling of cohesion give three Torben's solo statements which might be consider as a bridges and coda (Seated Man/Conic Folded/Løvetann).

Conic Folded music fascinates me on many levels. The first is just simply human, in which you feel, and do not think about what you heard – this are for me an excellent compositions, with harmonically ambiguous themes, which are slowly revealing arabesque beauty melodies. The second level of my enchantment includes side of performance. Leader on the clarinet and tenor saxophone in addition to the classical blast, intonation, shaping phrases, presents also a wide range of methods such as: quartertones, microtones, multiphonics, air notes, circular breathing. Sometimes it sounds like if he played flute (September, Seated Man), and sometimes his tenor in a low register sounds like a baritone (Løvetann).

When we speak about adventurous side of the music, in those scenes artists are moving away from the melody toward spectral perception of sound (Francis Faced # 2, Conic Folded). There are probably visible references to the art created by such musicians as Evan Parker, as a leader declares it in the EP Flowers. Jon Balke prepares piano sometimes uses it pulsatile. Strings of the piano sound at times like instrument used in the Indonesian Gamelan (Undercurrents). In the course of the entire album can be heard avant-garde tradition, as though under the sign of John Cage. Sometimes instruments preparations, awaken associations with drone music. Jonas Westergaard beautifully plays arco in Icons. All these measures comply subordinate role to the compositions and its narration, build its unusual and attractive tone. To summarize , it is very interesting, fresh and mature-sounding album.
